Facebook...friend or foe?

Dear Readers,

So I have some rules on Facebook. If you don't know what Facebook entails, go look it up or ask a randow teenager on the street. They'll tell you all about it. Anyway, most of rules are to keep me safe on facebook from Online predators and whatnot. Not that I'd ever really be a target for something like that, probably more like identity theft or something of the sort. I have over 700 connections on Facebook. How is that being safe? Well, I have some rules about who becomes connected to my pages on the networking site.

1. They must have at least 3 friends in common with me already. Sorry to those trying to break onto the facebook scene through me, you have to have a couple friends other than me.

2. There must be a picture of them on their profile. Whether they're tagged in someone's album or their profile pictures, it doesn't matter much. As long as they have two pictures up that I can tell are that person.

There are many other rules such as not adding useless applications or ignoring ads on the side of the page, but I follow all of them. Why am I writing about this? My fmaily thinks I was insane for not accepting my Aunt's friend request online a few days ago. She did not yet have a picture of herself on the profile created, so I did not accept. I was fairly certain it was her anyway, so the request merely sat in my box until she had a picture up. Now she is one of my connections, just like dozens of other relatives.

Am I crazy for trying to stay safe online? I think not.

Am I Proud to Be an American?

This weekend is the 4th of July, or Independence Day in the United States of America. One of my favorite songs during this time of celebrating the country is "God Bless the USA." The words paint a detailed picture of the beauty of the United States, both in a physical and emotional aspect. Our country is often depicted in a majestic manner such as this, making it seem like the greatest in the world and we often hear those bold words, "I'm proud to be an American."  With all of the issues that have been cropping up over the past couple of years such as impeachment, systemic racism, foreign intervention, and most significantly the COVID-19 pandemic, I have reflected deeply about what we celebrate with the 4th of July. These issues are just a few of the many that have made me wonder about the country we praise so proudly.  Am I really proud to be an American?  Thomas Jefferson wrote the candid words of the Declaration of Independence, which were th...

You make me dance like a fool, forget how to breath, shine like gold...

Dear Readers, Ok, so I can't fit the entire title into the title box. It's a good song, go look it up: "You make me smile." The title can apply to anyone, I've found. The rest of the lyrics would probably refer to a best friend or a significant other, but anyone can make you smile. They all have the own way of doing it. Some are just funny all the time and you can't help smiling when you're around that person. I know some who take care of people so well that you just smile when they're doing something for another. Others you can talk to about your problems and no matter what they say, it seems to make sense and you feel better...thus a smile. Ok, a smile doesn't always come in that case, but people usually smile after that. Anyone can have a blonde moment and make everyone smile because of it. I'm glad I've got friends who can do all of these: have blonde moments, take care of others or have an episode of hyperactivity that you can't he...

I Don't Wanna Be Anything Other Than Me

Dear Reader,  I work online at one of my part-time jobs. Sometimes it is required of me to look up a person's credentials or accomplishments to better fill out a description of their time on the radio. This means I do Google searches quite frequently to find their websites, their social media profiles, etc. By no means am I a guru on the world wide web, but I have been around the internet a few times. Why does any of this matter to you, reader? It matters because I have found a few things that are essential to being safe online. As much as anyone hates to admit, the persona built on the web greatly affects the actual person outside of technology. It matters because we need to review the tips on how to remain safe online regularly.  Here is a quick example of how important it is to monitor what you put online. If you put "Dale Lundstrom" into a Google search, there are 743 results as of today. A good number of those have nothing to do with me, it's true. Howe...
