Bye Bye Birdie

The Biggest news of the week? Elder Palmer is now the District leader! Wahoo! We all switched up so the old senior companions are now junior and Elder Lundgren is no longer District Leader. We also have a new district of ten Elders in our zone, going to Mexico and Peru. Four of them leave in a couple of weeks for the MTC down there. Guess what else? I have seen four people I know this week. You all may have heard of Russell Parkin, I hosted him when he came in. I also saw Elle Brey, a girl I went to EFY with like 3 years ago. You probably have no idea who that is. Eddy Gubler is finally here(He was in my ward at BYU) and....MAT THOMPSON! I saw him in the cafeteria yesterday and I found out he just got here this week and he's off to Roseville, CA. Exciting, right? I assume Kody is back from Korea, right? Anyway, that was the most exciting part of the week right there.
Our District has an awesome goal this week of trying to talk with 150 people in spanish. This means we walk around for a little while every day, talking to whomever will give us the time to talk. Our district is down to Seven. Elder Brown left weeks ago for Guatemala, but Elder Francis went home. None of us know exactly why, but he said he had some things to fix before he could serve again. Elder Corliss went home on Friday because he injured his shoulder and is getting surgery. The doctors estimate he'll back later this week, though.
Last night Elder Palmer and I had a great study session. We decided to study instead of watching movies because we've seen them all. We were both reading out of the Book of Mormon when he asked, "What is a Cherubim?" I had actually been thinking of that exact question about 3 seconds before he asked. We then spent about a half hour looking up as much as we could about them, mostly in Ezekiel and Joshua. Elder Palmer and I love the Book of Mormon, in English and Spanish. We read aloud in Spanish every day as well.
We haven't seen Kevin in awhile, so we assume he's either dead or the MTC staff got him out of the cafeteria. Have I not told you? Well, Kevin is a small little robbin that somehow flew into the building and has been living in the rafters of the Cafeteria for a couple of weeks now. We haven't seen him the past couple of days, so we're kind of sad. :( It's ok, though. We had a good time at dinner last night. With 700 new missionaries this week, the Cafeteria has been very crowded and we couldn't find a spot big enough for our whole district. We found a spot with 6 spots, so we squoze in another seat for all of us to sit there. I don't think the Hermanas sitting next to us were very happy about it, but we felt very accomplished.

Am I Proud to Be an American?

This weekend is the 4th of July, or Independence Day in the United States of America. One of my favorite songs during this time of celebrating the country is "God Bless the USA." The words paint a detailed picture of the beauty of the United States, both in a physical and emotional aspect. Our country is often depicted in a majestic manner such as this, making it seem like the greatest in the world and we often hear those bold words, "I'm proud to be an American."  With all of the issues that have been cropping up over the past couple of years such as impeachment, systemic racism, foreign intervention, and most significantly the COVID-19 pandemic, I have reflected deeply about what we celebrate with the 4th of July. These issues are just a few of the many that have made me wonder about the country we praise so proudly.  Am I really proud to be an American?  Thomas Jefferson wrote the candid words of the Declaration of Independence, which were th...

Book of Mormon Stories

Dear Reader, Today I simply want to share a story that has strengthened my testimony of the Book of Mormon over the years. Professor Felix Mynhardt was fluent in many languages, including English, Afrikaans, Hebrew and Egyptian, as well as many others. He was employed as a language professor when he had been praying that the Lord would give him some divinely important task that would justify his having this gift of language from God. In 1970 he visited with a group of Mormon leaders, who sought to commission him to translate the Book of Mormon from English into Afrikaans. He said that he knew of the Book of Mormon from his religions studies, and his initial reaction was that he did not want to be involved in translating it. However, that evening, as he prayed upon his knees, as was his habit, he said the Spirit of the Lord convinced him. The message was something on the order of, "You asked me for a great, divinely inspired task of translation, I sent it to you in the form o...

I've Been Watching You

Dear Reader, Our little boy has not even arrived yet and I am already feeling the pressure to a good example. All growing up, I was always told to never do anything that I wouldn't want my children to know about/do themselves. "Always be on your best behavior, your children will watch you." I will be honest, I have always agreed with that idea and I think it is a good way to live your life. However, I didn't feel the weight of that responsibility until my wife got pregnant. I feel like I am getting more and more pressure from myself to be a perfect example, even though this little boy hasn't even met me yet. That's why I am relating so much with this song right now. I know, this isn't too deep. I just wanted to share the song more than anything.
