Hey Yall,

Yeah, so this has been quite the week. I have to tell you that I am being taken care of by the higher power for sure. There´s no denying it. There is a lot that I´ve learned over the past few days; some things funny and some things meaningful.

Starting with something funny, I am convinced that there is a Chilean Equivalent for every person I know. The Chilean Equivalent this week is exactly like my good friend Mabel Draper. Yesterday we met the sister of a member family named Lesli. She looks, sounds, and acts exactly like Mabel. It´s uncanny, really. I´ll get a picture to compare if I can.

Something else funny I learned yesterday. You know that stuff called fry sauce that supposedly exists in Utah? We made it last night at an investigators house. Here they call it ´Sausa Americana´. Angelica, the lady that is investigating, started to put ketchup in a bowl and I thought, “that's funny. It looks like she´s going to make fry sauce.” and then she did. Miracles happen, that´s for sure. Now I know that Utah is a bubble that bursts at times. :)

What I discovered that I don´t like this week has to do with TV. Everyone here in Chile watches ´telenovelas´ or what we know as soap operas. They play on the TV all day every day and it seems like every time we enter a house somebody is watching one. I don´t like it in the least bit.

I´ve learned to follow the spirit more this week, too. We went to one house to visit a new investigator and she wasn´t there, but her neighbor was standing on the front porch. The spirit said to talk to her, so we did. Not only did we find out a whole bunch about the person we were going to visit, we found out this lady next door is a member and she hasn´t been to church in years but actively participates with the relief society. That´s how the spirit works at times, my friends.

We also traveled to Quilaco this week and I have to tell you that I am surprised. There is a town smaller than Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara is comparable to Logan, and Quilaco is comparable to Hyrum, I think. Anyway, there is a new member family that moved into Quilaco and we went to visit them with one of the other members in that small pueblo. They are very nice people that moved here from Santiago about a month ago but just barely came to church yesterday. I love Quilaco, mostly because of the walk to get there. It´s located about 2 miles outside of Santa Barbara, across a river and through the middle of nowhere (not to grandmother´s house, that´s for sure). I actually shouted, “I´m in the middle of nowhere” as we were walking there for the first time. It was a grand time.

This week´s amazing experience is the story of Gustavo. He is an old man that lives in Santa Barbara that we´re getting to know piece by piece because his baptismal record was lost. Therefore, we´re going around to the other missionaries, members and records to find out his life story because he doesn´t remember a whole lot. Did I mention he´s 81 years old? Well, he lives in what we would call an old folk´s home, but it´s not really. Zoralia, a lady here, takes in old guys to take care of them in their old age. She and her mom cook for them, care for them and relate all that they can to those who need their info. So, we´ve slowly discovered that Gustavo was born here in Santa Barbara in 1930 and we´ve seen some of the pictures of his youth. We love it here.

Yeah, that´s about it for us here in Santa Barbara. I have a testimony that can´t be broken of the power of prayer. Say your prayers everywhere, every day. I promise you will start to see the blessings in your life.

You make me dance like a fool, forget how to breath, shine like gold...

Dear Readers, Ok, so I can't fit the entire title into the title box. It's a good song, go look it up: "You make me smile." The title can apply to anyone, I've found. The rest of the lyrics would probably refer to a best friend or a significant other, but anyone can make you smile. They all have the own way of doing it. Some are just funny all the time and you can't help smiling when you're around that person. I know some who take care of people so well that you just smile when they're doing something for another. Others you can talk to about your problems and no matter what they say, it seems to make sense and you feel better...thus a smile. Ok, a smile doesn't always come in that case, but people usually smile after that. Anyone can have a blonde moment and make everyone smile because of it. I'm glad I've got friends who can do all of these: have blonde moments, take care of others or have an episode of hyperactivity that you can't he...

Am I Proud to Be an American?

This weekend is the 4th of July, or Independence Day in the United States of America. One of my favorite songs during this time of celebrating the country is "God Bless the USA." The words paint a detailed picture of the beauty of the United States, both in a physical and emotional aspect. Our country is often depicted in a majestic manner such as this, making it seem like the greatest in the world and we often hear those bold words, "I'm proud to be an American."  With all of the issues that have been cropping up over the past couple of years such as impeachment, systemic racism, foreign intervention, and most significantly the COVID-19 pandemic, I have reflected deeply about what we celebrate with the 4th of July. These issues are just a few of the many that have made me wonder about the country we praise so proudly.  Am I really proud to be an American?  Thomas Jefferson wrote the candid words of the Declaration of Independence, which were th...

That's What Makes the World Go 'Round!

Dear Reader, Bonus points go to whoever can name what movie today's song title comes from. Comment below to submit your answers. Today I wanted to give you an update on the great " ALS Ice Bucket Challenge " that is taking the internet by storm. What started as a small campaign to raise awareness and funds for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease) has grown and caused thousands of people to dump ice or ice water over their heads. That is how it works: one person nominates another to the challenge. That nominated person then has 24 hours to either donate $100 to the ALS foundation or have a bucket of ice dumped over their head. I would like to think most people are both accepting the ice bucket challenge and donating to charity. I won't judge, though. With all of this publicity that the ALS campaign has received, it made me think of other fads that people participated in during the 1920s and 1930s. Did you know that people regularly participated...
