Hey Yall,
Well, this week has been a little slow in the work, but we had some wonderful experiences. We've been giving more service and having fun with member families. You see, the membership here in Santa Barbara, as we found out yesterday, is more than 10 times the attendance on Sunday. There are 260 members and we haven´t had over 20 in the church since I've been here. Talk about the need for Permaneced. Permaneced is a program for helping members stay active in the church here in Chile. It was introduced about a year ago and is working pretty well if you do it right. I had the epiphany the other day that members are just like investigators, just with a baptism to their name. We're are all still learning every day things from the gospel.
Anyway, this week we met another crazy person like the guy that doesn't believe in prophets. We were knocking doors one day and a lady came out to talk to us. She started going off about how she was born Catholic, raised Catholic and is going to die Catholic so we would just waste our time talking to her. She then proceeded to go on about the missionaries always asking for ten minutes of her time every time they pass by and how they waste her time when they do that. During all of this talk about wasting time, Elder Bustos didn't say anything and I said maybe two sentences. Ironically, we wasted 20 minutes talking with the lady who didn't want to waste time. And by talking, I mean she was talking. Like I said, we basically said nothing.
Scripture for the Week: 2 Nephi 29:7-10. Let me know what you think of it. :)
We also chopped wood again this week. It was really fun because I knew more of what I was doing this time. We chopped about twice as much wood as we did the last time back in the city of Temuco. This time it was for a member and she was very nice about letting us using her special axe. Yes, an Axe, not a hatchet. I still don't use hatchets. ;)
We also played volleyball as a zone of missionaries last week and had a good time. Especially when Elder Burch smacked the ball over the fence into the yard of a kindergarten. We scaled the walls to see where it was, but we couldn't jump into the yard because there was no way to get back up. So, we sheepishly went over to the kindergarten and asked them to retrieve the ball for us. What an adventure, huh? Elder Burch then proceeded to knock it over another fence, but this time it landed on a roof and we just had to hop up on the wall and reach out over the roof for the ball. Yeah, we know how to play volley ball.
The word for this week: Mujerdocio. Sacerdocio is Priesthood in English and Mujer is woman. In essence, mujerdocio is the power of woman. Cool, huh? Elder Filamita and I thought it was really funny and we proceeded to explain to one of the members that men need priesthood because we need something to make us feel special.
The highlight of the week was the Activity of the Branch. We played various games and soccer at the chapel and we had lots of people come. The best part was the Stake Young Men's presidency coming with their families to enjoy the fun, too. We Played soccer, "Do you like your neighbor?" and other games with the kids. It was a success!
That's about it for this week. Like I said, we were a little slow as the work is concerned, but we're going to have a baptism soon, so we're really excited!

You make me dance like a fool, forget how to breath, shine like gold...

Dear Readers, Ok, so I can't fit the entire title into the title box. It's a good song, go look it up: "You make me smile." The title can apply to anyone, I've found. The rest of the lyrics would probably refer to a best friend or a significant other, but anyone can make you smile. They all have the own way of doing it. Some are just funny all the time and you can't help smiling when you're around that person. I know some who take care of people so well that you just smile when they're doing something for another. Others you can talk to about your problems and no matter what they say, it seems to make sense and you feel better...thus a smile. Ok, a smile doesn't always come in that case, but people usually smile after that. Anyone can have a blonde moment and make everyone smile because of it. I'm glad I've got friends who can do all of these: have blonde moments, take care of others or have an episode of hyperactivity that you can't he...

Am I Proud to Be an American?

This weekend is the 4th of July, or Independence Day in the United States of America. One of my favorite songs during this time of celebrating the country is "God Bless the USA." The words paint a detailed picture of the beauty of the United States, both in a physical and emotional aspect. Our country is often depicted in a majestic manner such as this, making it seem like the greatest in the world and we often hear those bold words, "I'm proud to be an American."  With all of the issues that have been cropping up over the past couple of years such as impeachment, systemic racism, foreign intervention, and most significantly the COVID-19 pandemic, I have reflected deeply about what we celebrate with the 4th of July. These issues are just a few of the many that have made me wonder about the country we praise so proudly.  Am I really proud to be an American?  Thomas Jefferson wrote the candid words of the Declaration of Independence, which were th...

That's What Makes the World Go 'Round!

Dear Reader, Bonus points go to whoever can name what movie today's song title comes from. Comment below to submit your answers. Today I wanted to give you an update on the great " ALS Ice Bucket Challenge " that is taking the internet by storm. What started as a small campaign to raise awareness and funds for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease) has grown and caused thousands of people to dump ice or ice water over their heads. That is how it works: one person nominates another to the challenge. That nominated person then has 24 hours to either donate $100 to the ALS foundation or have a bucket of ice dumped over their head. I would like to think most people are both accepting the ice bucket challenge and donating to charity. I won't judge, though. With all of this publicity that the ALS campaign has received, it made me think of other fads that people participated in during the 1920s and 1930s. Did you know that people regularly participated...
