Well, we had an interesting experience this week. We're teaching a young couple here in Curacautin named Silvia and Renaldo. We've talked about them getting married so they can get baptized. When Elder Rabanales and I were talking about what we could do to help them the other day, the thought came to mind: Why can't I perform the marriage ceremony so they can save a little money and we can do it in the chapel? So, we looked it up. Excitingly we found out that branch presidents, yes, can perform marriage ceremonies civilly. YAY!
However...not in Chile. The laws about marriage in Chile are dumb. Until a few years ago divorce was impossible. Now it's only ALMOST impossible. There's still a million things one has to do to get it done. Apart from that, the Chilean Law does not yet allow for Ecclesiastical Leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ to perform Civil Marriage ceremonies. Darn...maybe next time.
Remember: "When you are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your God." Mosiah 2:17
