Dear Reader,
Here's to looking for a job. My roommate and I are both in search of jobs. Job searching is fun, but very frustrating at the same time. He's a college graduate, so it's even better for him. While looking for jobs, one would think it's easy to find one by being willing to work in anything. That's not the case with Dale. Oh well...if you happen to hear of anything you think Dale can do, give him a call. He would love to look into it.
However, I write this post to talk about the purpose of a job. When I first starting searching this semester, I was looking for pretty much anything because I just wanted an income and more financial security in my life. However, upon more reflection and some serious talks with my roommates(who are awesome, by the way. I didn't realize how great we get along and how much we can depend on each other), I came to realize that being employed also has a spiritual and an emotional side to it. I realized another reason for wanting a place to work is wanting to contribute to society as a whole.
As of right now, I'm studying and fulfilling Gospel responsibilities, with not much else going on. People ask if I work and I awkwardly respond with, "No...I'm looking but I haven't found anything that works..." So, being employed not only benefits a person with money or experience, it gives a sense of accomplishment and a sense of worth. Just this morning I was reading about how people are becoming less useful in the business market because of machines and other factors. So, it's easy to feel worthless and pathetic when applying for jobs.
However, I want to remind you of two things our Heavenly Father has told us. First, the worth of souls is great in the sight of God.(see Doctrine and Covenants 18). Don't ever get down on yourself because you can't accomplish something, be it obtaining a certain job or anything else. God still loves you and considers you of great value. What can we do to overcome feeling worthless? Well, Doctrine and Covenants 58 explains how we're instructed "to be anxiously engaged in a good cause." Wherever you find yourself, do what you can. You'll feel better. If you're in class, participate and help others understand the material. If you're at home, help out with the chores.
Employment is a full-time job. We're employed as disciples of Christ.
