Jesus wants me for a sunbeam

Dear Reader,

You know a really great way to brighten your day? Work with little kids. It's quite marvelous when you feel their spirit. After all, they are 'an heritage unto the Lord' (Family Proclamation). I'll tell you a little about some kids I know.

I recently started volunteering at an elementary school, tutoring kids with math. Right now we're working on division. Long division. It's amazing to me to see how different each kid is. Some just do their homework without bothering anyone and finish very fast because they understand it. Others understand it but just don't want to do it. Still others just don't understand it. It's funny to see how each child bids for attention. The first and last try not to attract my attention while working on the problems. The second tends to want every bit of my attention and doesn't want to do the the work. Yes, children can be quite frustrating too...

My nieces and nephews are just about the cutest little people you can imagine. I have 3 nieces and a nephew who are all just adorable. I watch my siblings take care of them and try to take as many notes as possible. They do a pretty good job.

Here we're going to dive a little deeper into the mind of Dale, though. You see, being a blessed son of our Heavenly Father, I know that someday I'm going to be a father. Some days I think about it with great longing because I know it will be the greatest experience. Other days I dread it, knowing that it's a huge responsibility and it takes a lot of hard work. A friend of mine asked me the other day what my biggest fear was. Without hesitation the first out of my mouth was 'failure.' That applies a little towards anything in my life, but particularly towards my duty to be a loving and responsible father.

Now, I know I'll have lots of help. My wife will be amazing with our kids(I assume). My parents are always willing to help with anything. Most importantly, I know Heavenly Father won't entrust me with Children unless he knows I'm capable of 'rearing [them] in love and righteousness' as he stated through his Apostles.

The one thing no one can deny, however, is that any given child is capable of bringing a smile to your face. I've seen it in my life and the lives of others. Play with children. It's not an experience you can have very often. It's no wonder why Christ encourages us to become as they are. They have such a spirit about them.

Am I Proud to Be an American?

This weekend is the 4th of July, or Independence Day in the United States of America. One of my favorite songs during this time of celebrating the country is "God Bless the USA." The words paint a detailed picture of the beauty of the United States, both in a physical and emotional aspect. Our country is often depicted in a majestic manner such as this, making it seem like the greatest in the world and we often hear those bold words, "I'm proud to be an American."  With all of the issues that have been cropping up over the past couple of years such as impeachment, systemic racism, foreign intervention, and most significantly the COVID-19 pandemic, I have reflected deeply about what we celebrate with the 4th of July. These issues are just a few of the many that have made me wonder about the country we praise so proudly.  Am I really proud to be an American?  Thomas Jefferson wrote the candid words of the Declaration of Independence, which were th...

I like Happiness

Dear Readers, Happiness is great, don't you agree? Just the other night, it was a very frustrating and confusing night out with the Ensemble yet again, but I came back to my friend's house to hang out and just decided that being happy was more important than giving in to my gossiping desires. The rest of the night was just brilliant after I decided that. This morning was another example: I woke up late and was again frustrated. What did I do? I went to school and decided to be happy. The rest of the day went great! Be Happy! :D

When You Wish Upon a Star

Dear Reader, One short day in the [Segovia] City! It is a beautiful city, to be sure. As part of our study abroad program in Spain, our group takes various trips to different cities here in Spain to see museums, palaces and history from several different eras of humanity. Today it was a pleasure to travel to Segovia. We had several adventures while we were there. First off, we stopped off at the Palacio de la Granja (Palace of the Farm). It was an attempt to replicate the Palace of Versailles in France back in the 18th century. We weren't able to enter the palace itself, but we spent about an hour walking around the numerous gardens on the south side of the palace. The palace gardens awesome. The pictures taken here don't do it justice. The gardens stretched father than you can see and the statues were absolutely beautiful. They were representations of hunting on the grounds with dogs, Greek Gods, and other famous figures from the middle ages. However, despit...
