”This is the song that has no words”

Hey y'all,

There's a song by voice male thay sings about not having words for singing. It makes me think of ways that you can communicate without words: music, physical touch, body language, hidden meanings, etc. What's even more interesting is how different people perceive said non-verbal communication. I've been taking a psychology class and it's notable how similar most human beings are. It makes sense if you think about the fact that we are all children of the same Heavenly Father. We perceive things in very similar ways that many people do not realize. However, we think about these happenings in different ways and that's where we get variety. It's changed dramatically over the past few years as we've grown more accustomed to technology. Let me shed a little light on the subject.

First of all, Facebook. How many of you have ever seen someone post something on Facebook and wondered why on earth they posted it? Or "liked it." I have seen (and have probably been guilty of doing) a like by someone on something that they actually don't like. However, it may be an attempt to grab the attention of the person who made the original post about the thing person B doesn't actually like. Another example is someone inviting you to try something when they really don't want you to take up their invitation, they had the very clear goal of grabbing your attention, nothing more. These are not always the case, but I'm fairly certain that over half of you have done something similar to the situations mentioned above.

How does the other side of that work? Well, sometimes we can read too much into something someone posts. Let's take a husband and wife, for example. There is a little story about a husband and wife who had a couple of bad weeks based on reading too much into things. A husband was reading in the scriptures one night about praying for the forgiveness of sins. He noticed that he and his wife and everyone else in their town prayed for the forgiveness of their imperfections and faults. So, one night while he and his wife are praying, he prays for the forgiveness of his sins. His wife gets startled and long story short, she assumes he has started an affair with the young book-keeper at his office. From reading into it, she is e completely off emotionally for a couple of weeks until she finds out that he wasn't having an affair. Just imagine if this man had posted on Facebook about his new book-keeper. It would have been even worse.

There can be very vague and psychological games such as this on twitter, pinterest or even someone's blog. Again, we go to the possibility that someone writes something and you wonder if it's directed at you or written about something you've done. It could be coincidence, it could be that person wanting you to catch on to something. Take for example, a phrase you use frequently. Then you see that phrase as the caption to something someone else has written. That person is close to you. What do you think?

Yep, psychology is a fun thing. It's interesting to see how people react to different situations and see how you can help them. I challenge you all to try thinking like someone else for a day.

Am I Proud to Be an American?

This weekend is the 4th of July, or Independence Day in the United States of America. One of my favorite songs during this time of celebrating the country is "God Bless the USA." The words paint a detailed picture of the beauty of the United States, both in a physical and emotional aspect. Our country is often depicted in a majestic manner such as this, making it seem like the greatest in the world and we often hear those bold words, "I'm proud to be an American."  With all of the issues that have been cropping up over the past couple of years such as impeachment, systemic racism, foreign intervention, and most significantly the COVID-19 pandemic, I have reflected deeply about what we celebrate with the 4th of July. These issues are just a few of the many that have made me wonder about the country we praise so proudly.  Am I really proud to be an American?  Thomas Jefferson wrote the candid words of the Declaration of Independence, which were th...

I like Happiness

Dear Readers, Happiness is great, don't you agree? Just the other night, it was a very frustrating and confusing night out with the Ensemble yet again, but I came back to my friend's house to hang out and just decided that being happy was more important than giving in to my gossiping desires. The rest of the night was just brilliant after I decided that. This morning was another example: I woke up late and was again frustrated. What did I do? I went to school and decided to be happy. The rest of the day went great! Be Happy! :D

When You Wish Upon a Star

Dear Reader, One short day in the [Segovia] City! It is a beautiful city, to be sure. As part of our study abroad program in Spain, our group takes various trips to different cities here in Spain to see museums, palaces and history from several different eras of humanity. Today it was a pleasure to travel to Segovia. We had several adventures while we were there. First off, we stopped off at the Palacio de la Granja (Palace of the Farm). It was an attempt to replicate the Palace of Versailles in France back in the 18th century. We weren't able to enter the palace itself, but we spent about an hour walking around the numerous gardens on the south side of the palace. The palace gardens awesome. The pictures taken here don't do it justice. The gardens stretched father than you can see and the statues were absolutely beautiful. They were representations of hunting on the grounds with dogs, Greek Gods, and other famous figures from the middle ages. However, despit...
