Complicated

Dear Reader,

Yes, I did just use a song title from Avril Lavigne. As this week continues, I couldn't think of a better word to describe how life and schedules are developing. It seems almost impossible to get everything done that you need to. However, there is always time to get the most important things done.

Allow me to tell you a little about what is going on this week. Last night we had FHE. We ended up with some food from Asia after our game of "Bigger or Better." For those who don't know how to play, the rules are simple. Each person (Or team) begins with something small such as a toothpick or a penny. By going around in the neighborhood, the goal is to trade that object for something bigger or better than what you have. You start with a penny, but you could come home with a BBQ Grill (Don't believe me? Ask my brother about it). As an example, you might trade the penny for a pencil then trade the pencil for a plate. Somewhere amid the trading you might get a karaoke system. It's a fun game that always adds up to big fun.

Today is the last day of Winter Classes. I had Biology this morning. The TAs had a review session about the entire semester, which was helpful. After that, there was a training meeting for Españolandia, a Spanish field-trip for Spanish students across Utah. Elementary, Junior High and High School students all come for the experience of what it must be like to live in a different country where they speak Spanish. Volunteer students from BYU put together different activities that the young kids might do in said country. For example, there is an embassy where they get their passports stamped, a radio with Spanish music, and different stores to buy souvenirs. I will be part of the police force. There is a law that English cannot be spoken in Espanolandia, so it is our job to apprehend violators of this law and throw them in Jail.

We will have this activity on Thursday of this week. I'll let you know how it goes. Tomorrow is the only day that I don't know what to do with. It is the first reading day before finals. However, it is the last chance to get out and do something with some people before the semester ends and the majority leave to go home or to go on missions. So, it complicates schedules. Oh well, we will sort something out.

The other complicated things have to do with the finals themselves. I want to get them all done on Friday just to get them over and done with, but I don't know if that will be possible. I do have one final on Monday that is scheduled. I am not looking forward to that, but I know that I can get a good grade on it. Optimism. It really is a great thing.

Dear World, I will be able to survive the next couple weeks. I will be able to get everything done. It is not clear how to do it quite yet, but I will get it done. :)

Am I Proud to Be an American?

This weekend is the 4th of July, or Independence Day in the United States of America. One of my favorite songs during this time of celebrating the country is "God Bless the USA." The words paint a detailed picture of the beauty of the United States, both in a physical and emotional aspect. Our country is often depicted in a majestic manner such as this, making it seem like the greatest in the world and we often hear those bold words, "I'm proud to be an American."  With all of the issues that have been cropping up over the past couple of years such as impeachment, systemic racism, foreign intervention, and most significantly the COVID-19 pandemic, I have reflected deeply about what we celebrate with the 4th of July. These issues are just a few of the many that have made me wonder about the country we praise so proudly.  Am I really proud to be an American?  Thomas Jefferson wrote the candid words of the Declaration of Independence, which were th...

Book of Mormon Stories

Dear Reader, Today I simply want to share a story that has strengthened my testimony of the Book of Mormon over the years. Professor Felix Mynhardt was fluent in many languages, including English, Afrikaans, Hebrew and Egyptian, as well as many others. He was employed as a language professor when he had been praying that the Lord would give him some divinely important task that would justify his having this gift of language from God. In 1970 he visited with a group of Mormon leaders, who sought to commission him to translate the Book of Mormon from English into Afrikaans. He said that he knew of the Book of Mormon from his religions studies, and his initial reaction was that he did not want to be involved in translating it. However, that evening, as he prayed upon his knees, as was his habit, he said the Spirit of the Lord convinced him. The message was something on the order of, "You asked me for a great, divinely inspired task of translation, I sent it to you in the form o...

I like Happiness

Dear Readers, Happiness is great, don't you agree? Just the other night, it was a very frustrating and confusing night out with the Ensemble yet again, but I came back to my friend's house to hang out and just decided that being happy was more important than giving in to my gossiping desires. The rest of the night was just brilliant after I decided that. This morning was another example: I woke up late and was again frustrated. What did I do? I went to school and decided to be happy. The rest of the day went great! Be Happy! :D
