Get Me to the Church on Time

Dear Reader,

Ok, so this video was accurate over a week ago, but I hope you'll forgive me for not writing a blog post the night before our wedding. The wedding was fantastic and we had a great time with the family and friends who joined us.

The first week of marriage has been quite an adventure as well, especially with school starting. Between classes and work, we have both been burning the candles at both ends just to get our belongings put away in our apartment. Although, we have been getting quite a few questions while in class or at work both before and after the sealing. I wanted to take a minute and answer those questions to the best of my ability.

Where did you two meet?
James, our now mutual cousin, set Lauren and I up on a blind date when I got home from my mission. James and I went to high school together and the day after I got home he asked if we could double the next Friday. Looking back now, I can accurately say that I met my wife within a week of being home from a full-time mission. Thus, we had our first date at Chili's in Salt Lake City.

What do you love about Lauren?
I LOVE this question. Mostly because Lauren hates it when I brag about her, so she can't say anything about it when people ask me that question (can we pretend you're asking me that question? Deal). There are many, many things I love about Lauren and I should write them all down, but we will talk about the major ones.

Lauren is incredibly smart and hard-working. We didn't know each other during high school, but from what her family and friends tell me, she was one of the most studious high school students there ever was. Today she still works hard in whatever she does and is always very smart about how she does things. She is the one that always comes up with good ideas when we plan things (I come up with ideas...but hers are good). She also has very good insights on every topic imaginable. If she doesn't know much about something, she asks questions. That is one of the best traits of an intelligent person.

When it comes to being active, Lauren is on the high end of the scale. She plays softball, loves dancing and regularly spends time in the outdoors. We love hiking (despite not having a lot of time for it this summer) and go on walks just because the weather is beautiful.

Her family is also very important to her and she loves them a ton! She regularly talks on the phone with her mom, dad and siblings. They are great and I love spending time with them, especially when Lauren feels like she can be herself around them.

The thing I love most about Lauren is the everybody loves her! (I love her the most, though) A lot of the time people will hear someone's name and they will say, "Oh yeah, he/she is cool, etc." You can always tell when those people are being sincere or just saying something nice just to make small talk. However, everyone who ever talks to me about Lauren genuinely loves Lauren. Not a day goes by that I don't talk to someone who knows her or even meets her for the first time who says, "I LOVE Lauren! She is so amazing!" with sincerity in their voice. It is great to know that I married the right woman.

Are you Lauren's Fiance/Husband?
I'm surprised how much I get this question, before and after the wedding. Yes. Yes, I am her husband. It is quite satisfying to claim that, as well as claim her as my wife.

When did you first know you wanted to marry Lauren?
This question was most recently asked by President Shepard, Lauren's stake president. He wanted to meet with both of us and just spend some time getting to know us. This was a question he asked us both. The answer is clear to me. The first time we ever babysat our nephew Hyrum, together.

She took him into the bedroom to set him down for the night after we had been playing with him. She was cradling him in her arms and bouncing, just like most people do to relax a young child. She then started singing primary songs very softly in his ear in Portuguese. As she sang and hummed, she looked so beautiful and I thought, "She is going to make a great mother." Her voice was gorgeous in that moment, despite the low volume of it. It was then that I knew I wanted to marry her.

Those are all the questions I will answer today. As we get settled into the semester, we will be able to share more of our adventures with you. TTFN!

Am I Proud to Be an American?

This weekend is the 4th of July, or Independence Day in the United States of America. One of my favorite songs during this time of celebrating the country is "God Bless the USA." The words paint a detailed picture of the beauty of the United States, both in a physical and emotional aspect. Our country is often depicted in a majestic manner such as this, making it seem like the greatest in the world and we often hear those bold words, "I'm proud to be an American."  With all of the issues that have been cropping up over the past couple of years such as impeachment, systemic racism, foreign intervention, and most significantly the COVID-19 pandemic, I have reflected deeply about what we celebrate with the 4th of July. These issues are just a few of the many that have made me wonder about the country we praise so proudly.  Am I really proud to be an American?  Thomas Jefferson wrote the candid words of the Declaration of Independence, which were th...

I like Happiness

Dear Readers, Happiness is great, don't you agree? Just the other night, it was a very frustrating and confusing night out with the Ensemble yet again, but I came back to my friend's house to hang out and just decided that being happy was more important than giving in to my gossiping desires. The rest of the night was just brilliant after I decided that. This morning was another example: I woke up late and was again frustrated. What did I do? I went to school and decided to be happy. The rest of the day went great! Be Happy! :D

When You Wish Upon a Star

Dear Reader, One short day in the [Segovia] City! It is a beautiful city, to be sure. As part of our study abroad program in Spain, our group takes various trips to different cities here in Spain to see museums, palaces and history from several different eras of humanity. Today it was a pleasure to travel to Segovia. We had several adventures while we were there. First off, we stopped off at the Palacio de la Granja (Palace of the Farm). It was an attempt to replicate the Palace of Versailles in France back in the 18th century. We weren't able to enter the palace itself, but we spent about an hour walking around the numerous gardens on the south side of the palace. The palace gardens awesome. The pictures taken here don't do it justice. The gardens stretched father than you can see and the statues were absolutely beautiful. They were representations of hunting on the grounds with dogs, Greek Gods, and other famous figures from the middle ages. However, despit...
