I'll be there

Dear Reader,

Today's lyrics are found in all kinds of songs around the world, but it is actually a movie that I want to focus on tonight. Yes, most of you will say I'm behind the times when you hear what movie it is. Today was the first time seeing The Blind Side. For those of you who don't know, it is the movie based on the story of Michael Oher, a guy who had a miraculous journey from a bad neighborhood to eventually making it as part of a professional football team. As a fair warning, I will be very honest because I have never been moved so much by a movie. I only say that because tears were welling up in my eyes and was close to crying, closer than I have ever been before when watching a movie.

The most impacting scene was the interaction between the main character "Big Mike" and his caretaker, a women who has two kids of her own and a rich life in the southern United States. While Big Mike is at football tryouts, he is struggling with the game. He hasn't played formal football in his life and has a very hard time with the plays and taking care of his position as left-tackle. Because of this he was having a hard time doing the drills. When his caretaker sees this, she walks over and begins to ask how much he is willing to protect their family. She grabs the quarterback and says, "This is your quarterback. Your job is to protect him. When you see him, I want you to think of me and how you have my back."

She continues to present a couple other players on the team and explains who they are to him. After taking the time to tell him about protecting the other player, he starts playing in a more aggressive manner. Michael begins to plow through the other players and giving a great advantage to his team. The impact of this scene comes from the feeling of protection. To conclude her idea, she asks, "Are you going to protect this family, Michael?"

I really thought hard about that exchange. It hit me very hard and inspired me to be protective like Big Mike. After watching the movie, I thought about whether or not I am protective like him. I have never had many instances that required great defense for my family. The one time I even came close was when someone called Lauren a prostitute. I was going to beat his butt to the ground.

This blog post has transformed into a movie review, but it is the ideal of the movie that impressed me, not the quality of film. I urge you to watch it. You will feel similar things.

Am I Proud to Be an American?

This weekend is the 4th of July, or Independence Day in the United States of America. One of my favorite songs during this time of celebrating the country is "God Bless the USA." The words paint a detailed picture of the beauty of the United States, both in a physical and emotional aspect. Our country is often depicted in a majestic manner such as this, making it seem like the greatest in the world and we often hear those bold words, "I'm proud to be an American."  With all of the issues that have been cropping up over the past couple of years such as impeachment, systemic racism, foreign intervention, and most significantly the COVID-19 pandemic, I have reflected deeply about what we celebrate with the 4th of July. These issues are just a few of the many that have made me wonder about the country we praise so proudly.  Am I really proud to be an American?  Thomas Jefferson wrote the candid words of the Declaration of Independence, which were th...

I like Happiness

Dear Readers, Happiness is great, don't you agree? Just the other night, it was a very frustrating and confusing night out with the Ensemble yet again, but I came back to my friend's house to hang out and just decided that being happy was more important than giving in to my gossiping desires. The rest of the night was just brilliant after I decided that. This morning was another example: I woke up late and was again frustrated. What did I do? I went to school and decided to be happy. The rest of the day went great! Be Happy! :D

Book of Mormon Stories

Dear Reader, Today I simply want to share a story that has strengthened my testimony of the Book of Mormon over the years. Professor Felix Mynhardt was fluent in many languages, including English, Afrikaans, Hebrew and Egyptian, as well as many others. He was employed as a language professor when he had been praying that the Lord would give him some divinely important task that would justify his having this gift of language from God. In 1970 he visited with a group of Mormon leaders, who sought to commission him to translate the Book of Mormon from English into Afrikaans. He said that he knew of the Book of Mormon from his religions studies, and his initial reaction was that he did not want to be involved in translating it. However, that evening, as he prayed upon his knees, as was his habit, he said the Spirit of the Lord convinced him. The message was something on the order of, "You asked me for a great, divinely inspired task of translation, I sent it to you in the form o...
