Dear Reader,
Do you keep a dream journal? I do.
There is that moment in the morning after you wake up but can still remember your dream. It is not long before that dream is driven from your conscious mind, though. The purpose of a dream journal is not only to remember the dreams you have. Someone who keeps a dream journal regularly will start to remember more and more details about the dreams they have and they will dream more often.
I started this dream journal my first semester of college. It was a suggestion from my first roommate, who was a great guy to be living with. We would talk until the early hours of the morning and he explained to me one night about his dream journal. He emphasized that the key is to have it close to your bed, so you can start writing the second you wake up. A few of the dreams he had were pretty spectacular and he could recall them in detail because he had written them down in detail. I've been doing the same ever since and every time I write down a dream, I remember more details about what was going on.
One question remains, though. What do dreams mean? Of all the questions I've ever been asked, this is likely the one that bugs me the most because I don't know a good answer. Everything is based on the plan that God has for us. In the scriptures we read about different people having dreams of things to come. Joseph dreamed about being ruler over his brothers, the Pharaoh dreamed about the famine that was to come and King Nebuchadnezzar dreamed about the fall of a kingdom. Sometimes these stories include dreams with warnings from God. Whatever the case, not many people know what their dreams mean, if they mean anything at all. Scientists argue that dreams are simply an enhanced accumulation of thoughts that went through our head the day before or of thoughts that stress us.
I like my dreams normally. The last nightmare I remember is one I had when I was 6. Of course there have been bad dreams since. I don't know exactly what the dreams mean that I have had lately. They are often very similar and always include one person. The majority of them include the same group of people. It helps to keep a dream journal, though. Then you can see patterns and categories in your dreams.
